Kiln Dried Lumber - The Appalachian
Hardwood Lumber Company offers the finest Northern Appalachian
lumber available on the market today. This is based on several
factors. One is our ability to procure lumber from the finest
timber areas of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New York.
The other is our employment of stat-of-the-art facilities and
equipment. Last, we employ only highly trained lumber inspectors,
lumber handlers and machine operators. These factors ensure that
when you order from Appalachian, you will receive the finest texture,
color and grade from our Kiln Dried Lumber. Below are some of
the species we carry.

White Oak - Light brown heartwood, prominent wood rays
and strong grain pattern.
Red Oak - Similar to White Oak but with a pinkish
cast heartwood and somewhat stronger grain pattern.
Hard Maple - Shares many of the same qualities
as birch. It is hard, strong and has a good resistance to shock.
Hard maple has white sapwood and brownish heartwood.

Soft Maple - Identical in appearance to hard
maple but softer and easier to work. White sapwood and mild brown
heartwood.
Ash - Combining medium weight with superior toughness
and strength, the wood has pale brown heartwood and nearly white
sapwood. The grain pattern is strong.

Poplar - A light weight fine grained wood with
whitish sapwood and yellowish green heartwood.
Cherry - Machines easily and takes a beautifully
transparent finish. The heartwood has a reddish brown color and
the sapwood has an off-white color. May contain gum pockets and
streaks.

Hickory - America’s heaviest, hardest and
toughest commercially important hardwood. The heartwood is tan
to brown in color. Sapwood is white.

Mahogany - Turns well, carves well, and is an
excellent pattern wood. This reddish brown wood finishes beautifully
and makes an excellent exterior wood.

Walnut - Machines and finishes well and is dimensionally
stable. The heartwood is brown in color while the sapwood is white.
Steaming the lumber will darken the color of the sapwood almost
identical to the color of the heartwood.

S4S (Surfaced Four Sides)
S4S is a dimension product typically
used by retail lumber yards, millwork companies, and cabinet manufacturers.
Every S4S board goes through a rigorous selection and state-of-the-art
manufacturing process.
First, the proper lumber is selected for superior
qualities such as grade, texture, and color consistency. Then,
all the boards are surfaced to a hit and miss thickness on a Newman-Whitney
EPR-24 Planer. This operation virtually eliminates cup and minor
surface checking. The boards are then scanned for width and defect
optimization by a Grecon Dimter Scanner and then gang-ripped on
a Raimann Moving Blade Rip Saw.
Next, the boards are optimized for length and
precision double end trimmed on a Grecon Dimter Opticut 350 Optimizing
Saw System.
Finally, the boards are run through a Weinig
outboard bearing high-speed molder that gives the finest molded
S4S finish available on the market today.
Appalachian produces S4S products from most of
the species we carry, although some are manufactured on a custom-order
basis. Below is a list of our in-stock items in Red
Oak and Poplar.
